Indispensable - A Hypertext Short Story - Page 6 When they arrived, he opened the door and they got in. He looked all around but could not find the little notebook that the phone numbers were written on. "I am sure" he was saying, "there was a little notebook, a black one, all the numbers my wife wrote in it". She asked to make sure that this was a seperate notebook from the one that he had told his wife had with her but the look on his face was not full of confidence this time. "I think so" he said but then again with a sincere voice he added "I am not too sure". Apparently he didn't have the number written anywhere else also. With a smile on his face as innocent as that of a child he said "you see, a person becomes indispensable after so many years together, I can't even find the simplest things without her". Somehow there was something about that house, almost even in the way the furniture was placed that made her think Mesut was out of place in there without his wife with him.

She was somewhat relieved though when he told her that though his wife tended to forget things now and then, she was well aware of her surroundings and always carried her purse with her so surely if she would ask for help, people would be able to help her and call them. Even further, he told her that his son usually calls a few hours after their train is scheduled to arrive to check on them and make sure that they had arrived safely.

So they started waiting. She thought the phone would ring sooner or later with either his wife or their son calling. Or maybe the security guards would find the lady and call her on her mobile phone. Though Mesut looked worried, he also had on his face a certain feeling on tranquility. "While we wait, do you want to hear a story about the roads travelled?" he asked, "from one of these train trips we took, me and my wife, back in the day" he added. She smiled. She had been on the road so very much but lacked any interesting stories. She would be most interested in hearing an interesting road story. She wished she had one of her own.
